about

A few sketches of my songs as brought to life on the piano by my friend Jorge Castro.

Jorge Castro and I made music together hundreds of times in the previous decade mostly por la iglesia, in the acoustically gracious sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan. During worship, Pastor Heidi played guitar and Annie played tambourine along with us. But Jorge and I would keep improvising on the worship songs and themes of the day until everyone else was long gone after la misa en español. I would be astounded by Jorge’s limitless invention. He would say, “¡Pero es el ritmo!”. It was the rhythm that was limitless.

Sometimes I would join him to play the contemporary service at Park Avenue United Methodist Church later that Sunday. We played an open mic and a church fundraiser or two. We were almost a band. Or maybe we were. A church band of dos hermanos. Jorge brought true virtuosity on the piano, a towering musical intellect, and a generosity of spirit. I brought my divergent musical thinking, my need to connect the voice with el ritmo de herencia, and an always growing repertoire of original songs.

I am especially grateful that Jorge brought his gifts to bear on several of my originals, before I had enough technique to even say what key a song was in. He could play whatever weird bass line I heard along with them and find the harmony that connected them. He helped me sketch out, sometimes complex irregular, forms. All of it guided by el ritmo.

¡Dale Jorge!

I hope you hear this. I am sorry that we lost touch with each other. I hope you are well, amigo.

De la Guagua = of the bus, of us. Insight-driven roots-radical rapper, music/dance-maker, Afri-Boricua folklorista, Christian. I work on wholeness in a world that divides and conquers because we are emotion and intellect. We all need a Bible, a hymnal & a drum to know where we're going and where we come from, a person becomes a person among people, and a nation needs freedom, land & dance-halls. ... more
